Leaving the corporate world
So that was a bit of a whirlwind.....
In January, I took the plunge and resigned my 20 year career as an audiologist. It was a tough decision and I'll be honest, I agonised over it.... FOR FIVE YEARS!!!!! Yes, it really did take me that long. Looking back did I wait too long? No, I think my decison came at the pefect time. Within a couple of weeks of resigning, the company was sold and people jokingly asked had I had a psychic revelation it was coming? (I hadn't) But of course, I am sure for the people remaining there, the future is looking good, albeit a few teething problems initially as they swap from one system to another.
I left that job 2 months ago and it has been a very freeing feeling. Waking up on a morning, I still occasionally think... which clinic am I working in today? And then I realise I don't have to go to any of them! ๐ I have had a good rest and decompressed. Getting a car was a major investment I hadn't had to consider for 20 years but that is sorted now. Then came "Making Tax Digital" for a company I hadn't really had to do much for before now. That was hard work to get a good deal... at one point I considered going on a course to do it myself but then I found a company called Tiny Tax that did what I needed in minutes. At this point I realised I was paying for accounting software twice (my bank already did it and I hadn't realised). Doh!
So have I flown out of the starting blocks onto my new career being self employed? Not exactly! If I'm honest I have been a little bit lazy and have barely done anything, although in some deep reaches of my mind I console myself with the fact maybe I needed this? Maybe I needed to do nothing for a while and enjoy the space that has been created. I have loved every moment of it... even the tough moments wondering what the future will bring (and what it won't bring... not necessarily a bad thing). I've had to rethink how I prioritise money (again, not necessarily a bad thing!)
What I have loved the most is being able to say yes when asked to look after my grandsons. They have made me laugh so much when we have been together. They both love Nana Claire's big car too! ๐Since leaving the corporate world I also LOVE LOVE LOVE that when someone asks if I want to do something on a certain day, I nearly always can say yes! No more working over Christmas, no more trying to get a week off in August when all the parents with young kids need that time off instead.
I have of course made the most of this time. I have done lots of gardening, cooking, and I have climbed mountains every chance I have got (even managed to do Helvellyn and Scafell Pike which were both on our wish list!). Next one will be Coniston to Old Man of Coniston, then we plan to do Blencathra and in August we go up to Fort William for the big one... Ben Nevis. It's very exciting!! Incidentally that's why I picked the photo above... we see loads of these little rock piles on our travels around the Lake District. Being in nature up a mountain really is something else! I can throughly recommend it!
Oh… and I started 2 martial arts classes… Wing Tsun and Escrima. I’m pretty awful at them both right now but I really enjoy the classes. Hitting people with sticks or punching someone is not exactly a forte of mine and the techniques are much more complicated to do than they look.
So... what's next? I really need to get my head out of holiday mode and start thinking about earning a living again. Have you looked at what I do and thought to yourself... I'd love to have a session of that! Or have you found yourself intrigued wondering what could you find out about yourself? Get in touch and let's have a chat. I offer a free 30 minute consultation so we can discuss what you would like from a session... or even if you just want clarification on what each modality is as you aren't sure of the differences between them. Maybe you want to be brave and leave the corporate world too? I'd love to help you if I can! ❤️
